Hello UCSD Pre-PAs! I recently completed my first year of PA school at USC. I was born and raised in San Diego, specifically Chula Vista, and it still feels surreal that my first year is already over. I first discovered my passion for becoming a PA during my freshman year at Cal State LA. I truly believe this experience helped me stand out in my application, so it’s great to see all of you actively involved in your campus’s Pre-PA organization!
Before applying, I attended numerous Pre-PA events, conferences, and open houses, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in PA school. These events provide valuable insight into different programs, and I encourage you to network and introduce yourself to faculty and staff whenever possible.
For my patient care experience, I worked as an EMT for four years during undergrad and also gained experience as a scribe and medical assistant for a few months before receiving my interview and acceptance into PA school. My journey was a bit unconventional—I applied to only one program, which isn’t something I would recommend for everyone. However, I was deeply passionate about USC’s program, and after extensive research, conversations with current students, and a thorough understanding of their mission, I knew it was the right choice for me.
During undergrad, I was also a research assistant and volunteered as a COPE Health Scholar and with Homeless Healthcare LA at Skid Row. My PA school interview took place in January, and I received my acceptance in February. With extensive travel plans, I took the opportunity to relax before embarking on this challenging but rewarding journey.
PA school is highly competitive, but my biggest advice is to follow your passion and never give up. My first year was incredibly challenging in many ways, and there were moments when I doubted myself. However, perseverance and dedication helped me push through, and here I am today. To stand out as an applicant, stay consistent with your healthcare experience, and don’t be afraid to explore different roles if needed. Wishing you all the best in your journey to PA school—good luck! -Vanessa M.
